How to Start an iGaming Affiliate Site in India (2026): The Legal & SEO Reality

India's 2025 Online Gaming Act changed everything for betting affiliates. What the law actually prohibits, why offshore betting ads still dominate ASCI's violation reports, and the information-layer model that still works in 2026.

Quick answer: You can still build an iGaming affiliate business around India in 2026 — but not the old "best betting sites" playbook. India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games and their advertising, and the 2026 Rules are in force from 1 May 2026. The model that still works: own the information layer — regulation, industry news, e-sports and consumer guidance — and monetise adjacent, legal affiliate products.

The old betting-affiliate playbook was simple. In 2026, it could also be the fastest way to build a website you can't safely monetise.

At 11:47 p.m., someone in India searches: "Best betting sites in India." A few minutes later: "Is online betting legal in India?" Then: "Betting affiliate program India." And finally: "How to start a betting website in India?"

Those searches tell an interesting story. The demand didn't disappear. The business model did not disappear either. But the legal ground underneath it changed dramatically. India's Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games and also prohibits their advertising, promotion and facilitation. The government subsequently brought the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules, 2026 into force from 1 May 2026. (If you're wondering which apps are actually blocked, here's what's really on the record about betting apps banned in India.)

And yet, people are still searching. Offshore betting advertising is still being detected. Affiliate marketers are still talking about the Indian market. Google still has gambling-related search and advertising policies. So the obvious question is: can you still build an iGaming affiliate business around India in 2026? The answer isn't the one most affiliate tutorials want to give you.

The old playbook

For years, the formula looked almost too easy: find betting keywords, buy a domain, publish "Best Betting Sites in India" pages, add affiliate links, build backlinks, send users to operators, earn commission.

That model was attractive because the economics were straightforward. An operator wanted customers. The affiliate wanted traffic. Google had the traffic. Everyone understood the transaction. But there was always a question sitting underneath the business: what happens when the regulator changes the rules? In 2025, India answered that question.

Then India changed the game

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 doesn't simply distinguish between games of skill and games of chance in the way many older Indian gaming discussions did. The Act prohibits online money games, including games involving money or other stakes with the expectation of winning money or other monetary enrichment.

It also prohibits advertising of online money games and prohibits facilitating such games. The government has also created a framework around e-sports and online social games rather than treating the entire gaming ecosystem as one category.

That's an important distinction for marketers. Because "gaming" isn't one business. Online money gaming, e-sports and online social gaming now sit in very different regulatory territory. And that means an affiliate marketer needs to decide what business they're actually building before they start writing content.

The mistake: confusing search demand with legal opportunity

This is probably the most important lesson in the entire article. Just because people search for something doesn't mean you can legally build a business promoting it.

Imagine that tomorrow there are 200,000 monthly searches around "betting sites India." That tells you there is search demand. It doesn't automatically tell you to build a website that sends those users to betting operators. Those are two completely different conclusions.

This is where a lot of SEO thinking goes wrong. An SEO sees: high search volume + commercial intent = opportunity. A regulated-industry marketer has to add another question: is the commercial action I'm encouraging lawful and permitted? In India's current environment, that question is unavoidable.

The strange offshore market

Here's where the story becomes more interesting. You might assume that prohibiting online money games would make betting-related searches disappear. They didn't. And offshore betting promotion has remained a regulatory issue.

The Advertising Standards Council of India reported that 6,933 offshore betting advertisements were among the violations recorded in FY2025-26, making offshore betting advertising the largest category in that report. ASCI also reported that digital platforms accounted for the overwhelming majority of the advertising violations it reviewed. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting also issued a June 2026 advisory specifically addressing celebrity and influencer endorsements, advertisements and surrogate advertisements for offshore online betting and gambling platforms.

That's important because it shows something uncomfortable: regulation doesn't necessarily eliminate demand. It can instead move the fight into advertising, search, influencers, payments, domains and distribution. For an affiliate marketer, that means the marketing layer itself deserves scrutiny. (I wrote about how this under-the-table ecosystem actually works in iGaming in India: the under-the-table reality.)

So can you build an iGaming affiliate website?

Yes — but this is where the definition matters. If by "iGaming affiliate site" you mean a website whose primary commercial purpose is to promote prohibited online money games to Indian users and earn commissions from their activity — that is not a model I would build around India in 2026. The legal position is too important to treat as a technical SEO problem.

But there is another model. You can build a gaming media, research, information or affiliate business around permitted categories and adjacent commercial products. That's where things get interesting.

The smarter model: own the information layer

Imagine launching a site called India Gaming Intelligence. Instead of filling it with "best betting sites in India" pages, you build sections such as:

  • Regulation — India online gaming law explained, the 2025 Gaming Act explained, the 2026 Gaming Rules explained, online money games vs e-sports, what the new regulations mean for gaming companies, advertising restrictions explained.
  • Industry — Indian gaming company news, gaming business models, market analysis, funding, product launches, regulatory developments.
  • E-sports — tournament calendars, team profiles, player statistics, game guides, tournament analysis, equipment guides.
  • Consumer information — how to identify misleading gaming advertising, how gaming licences work, how to verify a company's regulatory claims, what to look for in gaming terms and conditions, how online gaming payment risks work.

Now you're still building around the gaming economy. You're still targeting commercially valuable searches. You're still able to use affiliate marketing where appropriate. But your entire business isn't dependent on sending Indian users toward prohibited online money gaming.

And this is where SEO gets interesting

Google doesn't reward you simply because you put an affiliate link on a page. Google explicitly warns about thin affiliation: pages that essentially copy merchant descriptions and add affiliate links without providing meaningful additional value. It also warns against scaled content abuse, including mass-generated pages created primarily to manipulate rankings rather than help users.

That makes the classic 1,000-page affiliate site increasingly unattractive. Imagine generating "best betting apps India," "best cricket betting sites India," "best betting sites with UPI"… and changing a few paragraphs on each page. You haven't built authority. You've built variations of the same page. Google's own guidance says good affiliate content should add meaningful value through original information, reviews, testing, comparisons or other useful features — the same shift I covered in affiliate marketing after Google's site reputation abuse crackdown.

Your advantage isn't AI

This is especially important in 2026. Anyone can ask AI to generate "10 best betting sites in India." The result might even sound convincing. That's not a competitive advantage anymore.

Your advantage has to be something AI cannot simply manufacture from the same public information: original research, first-hand experience, data, interviews, regulatory tracking, screenshots, comparisons, methodology, a recognisable author.

This is also where personal positioning helps. My site already sits at the intersection of performance marketing and iGaming — so the play isn't to pretend to be a generic gaming news publication. It's to own the intersection: performance marketing × iGaming × SEO × regulation × AI. That's much more differentiated.

What would I actually publish?

I'd create a pillar around this article and then build a cluster.

  • Legal cluster — Is Online Betting Legal in India in 2026? India Online Gaming Act 2025 Explained. India Online Gaming Rules 2026 Explained. Can You Advertise Betting Sites in India? Are Offshore Betting Sites Legal in India? Online Money Games vs E-Sports in India: What's the Difference?
  • SEO cluster — How to Do SEO for iGaming Websites in 2026. Can Betting Websites Rank on Google in India? Google's Gambling SEO & Advertising Rules Explained. Why Thin Affiliate Websites Don't Rank. How to Build an iGaming Content Strategy Without 1,000 AI Articles.
  • Industry cluster — Why India's Real-Money Gaming Industry Changed in 2025. What Happened to India's Real-Money Gaming Companies? How Offshore Betting Operators Still Reach Indian Users. The New Economics of iGaming Marketing in India.
  • Alternative affiliate cluster — How to Start an Esports Affiliate Website in India. Gaming Affiliate Marketing in India: What Can You Actually Promote? Gaming Hardware Affiliate Marketing in India. Best Gaming Equipment Affiliate Niches in India.

Now you have something Google can understand as a topic. Not one random betting article. A publication.

Your real SEO moat: build a regulatory tracker

Here's the piece I'd particularly want to own. Create a permanent page — India Online Gaming Regulation Tracker, 2026 — and update it every time something changes.

DateDevelopmentWhat changed
Aug 2025PROG Act enactedOnline money gaming prohibited
Apr 2026PROG Rules publishedImplementation framework announced
May 2026Rules come into forceRegulatory framework operational
Jun 2026MIB advisoryOffshore betting promotion addressed

The Act was enacted on 22 August 2025, while the 2026 Rules were published in April and came into force on 1 May 2026. Then keep updating the page. That's how you create a resource other websites might actually reference. And that's far more defensible than another "top 10 betting sites" list.

What about affiliate revenue?

This is where you need to separate the audience from the transaction. Suppose your reader is interested in competitive gaming. You can create content around gaming laptops, gaming monitors, keyboards and mice, streaming equipment, gaming courses, software and esports events — affiliate revenue from legitimate retailers and merchants, plus potential partnerships. The business remains affiliate marketing. The difference is what you're monetising.

Don't forget Google itself

There's another important distinction. Google has gambling advertising policies that explicitly cover gambling-promoting affiliate and aggregator sites in jurisdictions where such promotion is allowed. Google's current policy says gambling-promoting affiliate/aggregator sites must link to appropriately licensed and authorised gambling entities in the targeted geography, and its August 2026 update reiterates certification and licensing requirements — the same rules I broke down in iGaming PPC under Google's 2026 gambling ad rules.

So: Google policy ≠ Indian law. Passing Google's requirements does not give a business legal permission under Indian law. And the reverse is also true. Treat them as separate compliance questions.

The biggest SEO mistake I would avoid

Don't turn this into a 100-page AI content factory. A strong editorial voice — first-person stories, practical examples and performance-marketing lessons — is the moat. "A client once asked me why their iGaming site had traffic but no sustainable growth…" is more memorable than "In today's rapidly evolving iGaming landscape…" Please never start with the second one.

The strategy: a performance marketer explaining what's actually happening

The positioning that works here is "a performance marketer explaining what is actually happening" — not "another SEO website explaining marketing." That's the brand advantage: iGaming experience, performance marketing experience, SEO and AI, all in one place. It's the same positioning behind how I approach casino SEO when paid ads are banned.

And here's the controversial thesis I'd own

“India didn't kill the demand for online betting. It changed the economics and risks of marketing it.”

That's a genuinely interesting story. Because the question isn't simply "is betting legal?" The more interesting questions are: why are people still searching? Who is still targeting those users? How does offshore acquisition work? What happens to affiliates? What happens to SEO? What can marketers legally build instead? Those questions create much better content.

The final lesson

The temptation in regulated industries is always: "how close to the line can I get?" I'd ask a different question: what business still works if the rules become stricter tomorrow?

If your entire business depends on one betting operator, you don't own an audience — you own a referral pipeline. If 1,000 AI-generated pages disappear after an algorithm update, you don't have an SEO moat — you have 1,000 URLs.

But if you own original research, first-party data, a regulatory tracker, strong editorial opinions backed by evidence, a recognisable author, a trusted brand, an engaged audience and legitimate commercial relationships — then you have something much harder to replace. And that's the real 2026 iGaming opportunity. Not finding a loophole around India's new rules. Building the information business around an industry that is changing because of them.

Note: This is an SEO and industry analysis, not legal advice. Anyone intending to monetise regulated gaming traffic in India should have the specific business model and links reviewed by qualified Indian counsel before launch.

FAQs

Can you still start an iGaming affiliate site in India in 2026?+

Yes, but not the classic betting-affiliate model. A site whose primary purpose is promoting prohibited online money games to Indian users is not a viable model under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025. The workable model is a gaming media, research and information business built around permitted categories — e-sports, industry coverage, regulation tracking and adjacent affiliate products like gaming hardware.

Is online betting legal in India in 2026?+

The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 prohibits online money games — games involving money or stakes with the expectation of winning money — and also prohibits their advertising, promotion and facilitation. The 2026 Rules came into force on 1 May 2026. E-sports and online social games sit in a separate regulatory category.

Why do offshore betting ads still appear in India?+

Prohibition didn't eliminate demand — it pushed the fight into advertising, search, influencers, payments and domains. ASCI recorded 6,933 offshore betting advertisements among violations in FY2025-26, the largest category in its report, and the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting issued a June 2026 advisory on celebrity and influencer endorsements of offshore betting platforms.

Does passing Google's gambling ad policy make a betting affiliate site legal in India?+

No. Google policy and Indian law are separate compliance questions. Google requires gambling-promoting affiliate and aggregator sites to link to licensed entities in the targeted geography, but passing Google's certification does not grant legal permission under Indian law — and vice versa.

What is thin affiliate content and why doesn't it rank?+

Thin affiliation means pages that copy merchant descriptions and add affiliate links without meaningful additional value. Google explicitly warns against it, along with scaled content abuse — mass-generated pages built to manipulate rankings. A 1,000-page affiliate site with lightly reworded 'best betting sites' pages is variations of the same page, not authority.

What can an iGaming affiliate site in India actually monetise in 2026?+

Adjacent, legitimate affiliate products for the same audience: gaming laptops, monitors, keyboards and mice, streaming equipment, gaming courses, software and esports event partnerships. The business remains affiliate marketing — what changes is what you monetise.
