Google AI Overviews Are Eating Your Clicks — What Small Businesses in India Can Do

Meera's rankings didn't change. Her impressions were still there. But her clicks dropped — because Google started answering the question before people reached her website.

Meera owns a small home décor studio in Bandra.

For years, one Google search brought her steady customers: “Buy handmade wall art in Mumbai.”

Her website ranked well. People clicked. Some called. Some sent WhatsApp messages. Some bought.

Then one month, something strange happened.

Her Google rankings barely changed. Her impressions were still there. But her clicks dropped.

The reason? Google started answering the question before people reached her website.

That is the uncomfortable reality of Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. Instead of showing only the traditional blue links, Google can now generate an AI-powered answer using information from multiple websites. Google has continued expanding these AI search experiences, including deeper follow-up questions inside AI Mode.

So the customer gets the answer. You get the impression — but not necessarily the click.

Is SEO Dead?

Not even close. But “I rank #1 on Google” is no longer the whole game — Google's AI Overviews are already taking clicks away from Indian businesses.

Traditional SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps your website rank and get discovered.

Now you also need AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) — creating content that AI search systems can understand, extract and use as an answer.

And there's GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — improving your online presence so AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI can mention, cite or recommend your business. It helps to know how search is splitting between Google and ChatGPT.

Think of it this way: SEO gets you found. AEO helps you become the answer. GEO helps AI remember and recommend you. If your own clicks have been sliding lately, here's why website traffic drops in a zero-click world.

What Should a Small Business in India Do?

Start simple — the same foundations behind digital marketing for a small business in 2026.

  • Answer questions immediately. Don't make readers dig through 500 words to find the answer. Give the clear answer first, then explain.
  • Write like your customers search. Use questions such as “How much does Google Ads cost for a small business in India?” instead of vague headings like “Our Approach.”
  • Go deeper than keywords. Cover pricing, mistakes, comparisons, examples, results and FAQs around the same topic.
  • Show that you're real. Add author information, genuine case studies, reviews, statistics, experience and original insights.
  • Think beyond Google. Your potential customer may search Google today and ask ChatGPT or Gemini tomorrow.

The Real Question for 2026

The biggest SEO shift in 2026 isn't that Google disappeared. It's that search is becoming an answer.

And if AI is going to answer your customer's question, the real question is: will your business be part of that answer? That is the goal behind my SEO, AEO and GEO work.
